New York City Survival Guide

1. GENERAL INFORMATION

Considerable effort went into preparing this list and much of that goes
to my editors and advisors. Very little of the information in this
list originated with me; most of it came from lists already floating on
the net, Linda Cool, Eva Heineman, Myra Bronstein, Andre Ku, Ali Lemer,
and, no doubt, many other people who are now highly slighted and are probably
at this moment hurling epithets at my relatives and writing my home phone
number on washroom walls all over this continent. To those people, I give
my thanks (and the private 900 number: "call 1-900-nerd to hear two naked
techies discuss the advantages of monolithic, versus microkernel architectures
as a management system for large scale systolic systems scheduling")

Navigating in NYC (Manhattan):
==============================

Landmark Locations:

Streets are close together and Manhattan runs from low numbers in the
South to large numbers in the North. There are about 200 Streets.

	Avenues run from "D","C", "B", "A","1", ... "11" with higher in the
West. They are broadly spaced, approximately three "Street" blocks
        fit into each "Avenue" block.

Streets below (South of) Canal Street do not run in precise cartesian
order. It is easy to get lose your sense of direction.

Addresses of Streets (Not Avenues) are bisected by Fifth Avenue. That
is, one East will be the first door on the North-East corner
intersecting Fifth Avenue, and one West will be the first door on the
North-West corner. Even addresses are on the South side of the street.
For example: 47 West 53rd Street is on the UPTOWN/NORTH side of the
street; 300 West 79th Street is on the DOWNTOWN/SOUTH side of the
	street.)

Addresses of Avenues are a bit more complicated, since they start where
the Avenue does. This means that, say, one hundred Broadway is NOT
necessarily near the same Street as one hundred First Avenue.

I recieved the following paragraph from Linda Cool ... Unfortunately,
in the guise of expedience I am reminded of the aphorism: "An economist
||	is one who when asked a number he does not know will attempt to
estimate it!" WIth luck, this will be in English, Spanish, or Forth by
next year. :-) (though contributions are still welcome)

There is a generic "translator" in the front section
of the Manhattan Yellow Pages. (It has a table for
figuring out the cross street for an avenue address.
(E.g., if you know the address of your hotel is 1535
Broadway this chart will show you how to discover that
1535 Broadway is near (or at) 45th Street.))

New Yorkers do not navigate by the compass points. The following
"translations" will prove useful when asking for directions:

		North	- "Uptown"
		South	- "Downtown"

Subway: The subway runs 24 hours a day. They are fast, reliable, dirty, noisy,
potentially dangerous. Fares are $1.25 per token which must be
purchased in advance. Take note of subway entrances. Those with red
lights over them are for exit (not hookers). Those with green lights
are for entrance and most have a token sales booth. Many stations have
separate entrances for each direction, so take care which side you are
entering. They will be marked if entrances are separate. Most subways
run along Avenues (North-South) they also service Queens, Bronx,
Brooklyn. It is difficult to move East-West on the subway so it may be
faster to walk or cab for East-West trips. UPTOWN/NORTH BOUND TRAINS
have entrances on the EAST side of street. DOWNTOWN/SOUTH BOUND TRAINS
have entrances on the WEST side of street. There is a "Shuttle" train
whidh runs between Times Square and Grand Central Station (on 42nd
Street), and the L train runs on 14th St.

The token booth at the subway will give you a free subway map. Ask for
one, since it will give you many of the landmarks you will be
interested in and provide some reference points if you get lost.

The following list of locations has been extracted from perusal of the messages
I have archived from the RATcon mailing list in the last three months. I have
done a quick eyeball of the list and left things which I couldn't figure out as
"?" with the hope that some other more experienced "Manhattanites" will fill in
details. (alas in vain) Most of the contents has come from Andrew Ku, Linda
Cool and the R.A.T. charter. I have placed the information in a format which I
can easily edit and modify. I hope and expect that YOU will contribute details
like location, subway directions, etc ... of the theatres you plan to attend
(so that others planning to see the same shows can find them too.)

    1)	Please correct any details which you believe to be incorrect
    2)	Please add anything you think I have missed. (Particularly
	the subway directions)
    3)	Please correct my speling, my grammar two, you should correct!
|| 4) corrections should be sent to <goldfish@puchna.sbi.com>

The comment holds that updates are STILL appreciated.

2. HOTELS IN NEW YORK

Here is a listing of some of the more popular hotels in and around
the Broadway theatre district. By listing the following I am
by no means endorsing the hotels. I have no affiliation with any
hotel listed. If you have a favorite you don't mind sharing,
I would be happy to include it on the list.

PLEASE do not consider these rates to be iron-clad. Some group rates
depend on the number of people in the group, and we do not yet have
a reliable tally of attendees to the con. It may be safest to budget
about approx $90 single, just in case.

0 Single: $35-50 Double: $50-80 (as of early 1993)
$   Single: $70-85   Double:  $85-100
$$ Single: $90-100 Double: $105-120
$$$ Single: ~$150 Double: ~$175
